Monsoon Update: System Strengthens Over the Bay of Bengal, Heavy Rainfall Expected Over the Next 48 Hours

The low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal and adjoining north OdishaWest Bengal coasts has intensified into a Well-Marked Low Pressure Area. As of 8:30 AM on July 16, 2026, the system remained active over the same region and is expected to move northwestward across north Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal during the next two days. The influence of this system is expected to enhance rainfall activity across Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and eastern Uttar Pradesh. Many places are likely to receive moderate to heavy rainfall, while isolated areas may experience very heavy rainfall. Meanwhile, the western end of the monsoon trough remains north of its normal position, while the eastern end is close to its normal location. In addition, an active Western Disturbance over the Jammu & Kashmir region is influencing weather conditions across northwest India. Cyclonic circulations also persist over northern Haryana, eastern Uttar PradeshBihar, and southwest Rajasthan in the lower troposphere. A trough extending from the well-marked low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal to the east-central Arabian Sea continues to supply abundant moisture, supporting widespread monsoon activity. According to weather experts, a fresh Western Disturbance is expected to begin affecting northwest India from July 19. As a result, rainfall activity may increase once again across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand. Overall, the coming days are expected to bring an active monsoon spell across eastern, central, and northwestern parts of India. Farmers and the general public are advised to keep track of local weather updates and forecasts.
