Relief from Heatwave Likely Across North Indian Plains; Thunderstorms, Rain and Dust Storms Expected
The intense heatwave and scorching temperatures that have persisted across the plains of North India over the past week are likely to ease temporarily. A drop in temperature is expected across most parts of Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and western Uttar Pradesh. However, this relief is expected to last only for a few days, as temperatures may start rising again during the first week of June. The change in weather conditions will be caused by an active western disturbance that is expected to reach the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh region soon. Under its influence, an induced cyclonic circulation is likely to form over the northwestern plains. Along with this, an east-west trough will extend from the Gangetic plains towards southern Jharkhand and adjoining Chhattisgarh, leading to increased weather activity across the region. Over the past few days, maximum temperatures in several cities across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and western Uttar Pradesh have remained between 40C and 44C. Cities such as Bathinda, Ludhiana, Hisar, Rohtak, Meerut, and Aligarh experienced severe heat conditions. Meanwhile, temperatures in Sirsa and Rohtak touched nearly 46C, making the heatwave situation more intense. According to the weather department, thunderstorms accompanied by rain, dust storms, and strong winds are likely across Punjab, Haryana, Delhi, and western Uttar Pradesh between May 28 and May 31, 2026. Some areas may also witness hailstorms. Alerts have also been issued for lightning and stormy weather conditions during this period. Due to these pre-monsoon activities, temperatures may drop by 7C to 8C in many areas. Daytime temperatures in several regions could fall to around 34C to 35C, bringing significant relief from the extreme heat. Weather conditions are expected to improve around June 2 and 3, after which temperatures are likely to rise once again.
