Telangana Seeks Increased Rice Procurement Quota for Kharif 2025-26

Telangana government has urged the Centre to raise its Kharif 2025-26 rice procurement target to 53.6 lakh metric tonnes (LMT), equivalent to 80 LMT of paddy, citing an expected bumper crop and weak export demand. Civil Supplies Minister, in a letter to Union Food Minister, expressed concern over the Centre approving only 36 LMT of rice for procurement this season. He warned that low international rice prices would likely push more farmers to sell at procurement centres under the Minimum Support Price (MSP), requiring a higher quota to prevent distress sales. Reddy also highlighted critical storage issues, with 21.72 LMT of FCIs 22.61 LMT capacity already full, forcing millers to suspend operations. He requested hiring of additional godowns and faster stock movement to other states. On milling, he urged the Centre to allow delivery of custom-milled rice (CMR) in both raw and boiled forms, stating that most un-milled paddy is with raw rice millers. He also sought shifting the boiled rice target from Kharif 2024-25 to Rabi 2024-25.
